The growing strength of the Women’s British Basketball League has again been underlined, with no fewer than 13 candidates named in the Great Britain squad list for the start of next month’s FIBA Women’s EuroBasket 2019 Qualifiers.
Head coach Jose Maria ‘Chema’ Buceta will have 20 players to choose from ahead of the opener against Israel on Saturday 11 November at the National Basketball Performance Centre in Manchester. Click HERE to get your tickets for only £10 so you can support the team!
There could be local representation with Georgia Jones and Dom Allen of Manchester Mystics both included, while there is also a spot for WBBL rookies Chantelle Handy of Team Northumbria and Eilidh Simpson of Cardiff Met Archers – the latter is joined by her club team-mate, Stef Collins
Christina Gaskin of BA London Lions gets and opportunity to shine, as does Durham Palatinates livewire guard Nicolette Fong Lyew Quee and forward Harriet Ottewill-Soulsby. There is also a backcourt / frontcourt club combo in the form of Hannah Shaw and Siobhan Prior of Nottingham Wildcats.
Leicester Riders could provide a twin thrust under the basket via Jamila Thompson and Mollie Campbell, while perhaps the most intriguing inclusion is new Hatters signing Jennifer Ashton, who has only just received confirmed her clearance to play.
The squad is headlined by EuroLeague Women star Jo Leedham-Warner who plays at ESBVA-LM in France, along with recently crowned WNBA Champion Temi Fagbenle, who will be making a switch to CCC Polkowice after her silverware success at Minnesota Lynx.
“I trust this group of players to form the best team to achieve the big challenge of qualifying for FIBA Women’s EuroBasket 2019,2 commented Coach Buceta.
“After working hard in May and June to grow as a team, we will now concentrate on preparing for these games against Israel and Greece.”
“I’m sure we can get a good crowd in Manchester on November 11th to support the team,” he added.
