As the calendar passes under 50 days until the 2018 Commonwealth Games, Coach Andreas Kapoulas and his staff have another opportunity this coming week to take a look at potential players.
Evaluations for that final 12 began many months ago and were aided by an initial camp back in November where 24 players were given an opportunity to shine. Next week’s camp will provide some players with a further chance to make an impression, whilst others will be appearing for the first time. Coupling these 2 camps with ongoing assessments via club competitions, Kapoulas will then be able to name his final roster by the end of the month.
Coach Kapoulas said: “The November camp was a great way to start our on court preparations for the Commonwealth Games. Since the camp we have been tracking and evaluating the performance of all the players and we really look forward to welcoming this group on Sunday for our final camp on home soil. It will be an exciting 4 days that will give everyone the opportunity to get better and help our staff determine the 12 players that we will be taking to Australia.”
After helping Cheshire Phoenix to BBL Cup success, there is a return place in the 19 for Orlan Jackman and he is joined by team mate Devan Bailey who didn’t feature in November’s camp. Glasgow Rocks’ Kofi Josephs is also expected to suit up after being named but unable to attend last time out, and Worcester Wolves’ Robert Gilchrist is another player getting his first opportunity to impress. 18 of the 19 players named currently represent BBL teams, with only FG La Roda’s Jamell Anderson expected to fly in from outside the UK.
The players and staff will be involved with the Men’s camp from Sunday 18 through to Wednesday 21 February, with on court action taking place on the Monday and Tuesday. Basketball England would once again like to thank the British Basketball League and its teams for their assistance and support with the Men’s programme.
Basketball England’s Talent Development and Performance Manager Vladan Dragosavac said: “As the excitement grows and the days tick down to the Commonwealth Games, it is important that we can get the players into camp once again and bring this group together. Our thanks go out to the BBL and the BBL clubs for their flexibility and support in making this happen, the 4 days next week are sure to prove valuable for all involved.”
