2010 FIBA World Championship: Complete Sixth Day Roundup



The Preliminary Round of the 2010 FIBA ended today and the 16 teams that will advanced to the next round were already determined, which signals the most exciting stage of the tournament, the Knockout Phase.

In Group A, Nenad Krstic had a big night as Serbia escaped with an 84-82 win over previously undefeated Argentina, to bag the top spot in the group while relegating the South American country to second place. Australia also secured the third spot when they defeated Angola, 76-55. Despite the loss, Angola qualified in the next round even though Germany defeated Jordan 91-73 in final game of the group.

USA finished with an unblemished 5-0 record in Group B when they defeated Tunisia, 92-57, while Slovenia edged Asian Champions Iran, 65-60, for their fourth win in five games. Brazil defeated Croatia, 92-74, in their battle for the group’s third spot.

Host Turkey continued to dominate Group C and posted an emphatic 87-40 win over the group’s fourth-place China. Russia defeated Greece, 73-69, to finish second in the group, while Greece dropped to third. Cote d’Ivoire pulled off a surprising 88-79 win over Puerto Rico, but both of them were eliminated.

In Group D, Lithuania easily dispatched Lebanon, 84-66, for their fifth win against no defeats. Spain edged Canada, 89-67, while New Zealand had an 82-70 upset win over France.

The Round-of-16 (Eight Final) will start on Saturday, with all the games to be played in Istanbul, Turkey.
