Australia and USA, Emerge as World Champions

After ten exciting days of competitions, the Australia Men’s and USA Women’s Wheelchair Basketball Team were crowned as the 2010 World Wheelchair Basketball Champions in Birmingham.

The Australian Men’s Team bagged the gold medal in the men’s competition when they defeated the surprise finalist France, 79-69, in the Finals match.

Justin Eveson had a huge night, tallying 23 points and nine rebounds, and was 7-of-11 from the field helping the Australians snare the World Title.
Shaun Norris added 18 points, seven assists, and 5 rebounds, while Tristan Knowles chipped in 12 points for Australia.

The Aussies built an early five-point cushion, 20-15, at the end of the first quarter and followed it up with another dominating performance in the second period, outscoring their French counterparts, 79-69. France managed to outscore the Aussies in the third and fourth quarter by 3 points but the newly-crowned World Champions were simply too much to handle.

On the women’s side, USA executed crucial plays in the final minutes to defeat Germany in a thrilling match, 55-53, to take home the gold medal.

Becca Murray torched the Germans with her 25 points and five rebounds while Christina Ripp added eight points and nine boards for USA.

The finals was an evenly-contested match, with the third period ending on a 40-40 deadlock. Germany took a 1-point lead with less than a minute to go but USA’s Murray converted a two-pointer to give the Americans a one-point advantage, 54-53. Simone Kues had a chance to give the lead back to Germany but her shot was blocked by Andrea Woodson, which sealed the gold for USA.

On the other hand, Jon Pollock exploded for 34 points while Simon Munn tallied 19 points and 15 rebounds to help Great Britain finish 5th by clobbering Poland, 82-68, in the classification phase of the World Championships.

The Women’s team of Great Britain weren’t as lucky as their men’s counterpart bowing down to The Netherlands, 58-43, to finish sixth in the Championships.

Despite the disappointing loss, the GB Women’s Team improved from their eight-place finish in the previous World Championship.
