We have something special for everyone following Basketball in England. As you know team GB has won the first two games of the 2011 Eurobasket Qualifiers during the past week. The last game vs. Macedonia was the most spectacular game to date this year by winning in overtime. During Great Britain’s run for a chance to qualify for the Eurobasket 2011 and an eager possibility to represent England in the 2012 Olympics in London, a fan of basketball is trying help the team reach those heights. Sam from HoopsFix and Back British Basketball is campaigning for basketball fans and sportsmen all over to help Team GB reach is final goal of being accepted in the Olympics.
Enjoy the interview!!
What has driven you to create this campaign to Back British Basketball?
It needed to be done! When was the last time you saw a sellout crazy crowd at a GB game? Rarely, if ever. It’s time people started taking notice of Team GB and the talent we have in this country.
How long have you supported British Basketball?
I started playing when I was 14-15 and have been involved/around the game ever since. So 10 years or so…
Who is your favorite GB player both Men and Women’s team?
Couldn’t name a favourite but Pops is definitely the most entertaining to watch, the energy he brings every game is ridiculous (plus the highlights of course). For the women, Azania Stewart is definitely the most fun to interview and be around.
Do you believe that with the recent player drop outs such as Gordon, Freeland and other players will effect the Qualifiers in August?
Of course it will effect them in that they will be/are different, but not necessarily in a negative way. I think people withdrawing for whatever reason has actually been a good thing as it has allowed the young talent to come through and get experience. We need to get the young guys coming through now if we want to stand any chance of success at 2012. Look at Ogo Adegboye he’s come out of nowhere to steal a starting spot in the team!
You are currently campaigning your Back British Basketball throughout the region, have the people caught on and recognizing GB Basketball?
The BBB campaign has got a decent following already and I feel like it is definitely making an impact. However, I’m a realist and I know there is still a ton of work to be done.
We all know that basketball is not the strongest sport following in Great Britain. What do you think needs to be done for the sport to catch on like Football and Cricket?
This million dollar question! We could discuss this for days but I don’t think it can be pinpointed on any one thing. There’s a multitude of factors that play a role and there needs to be fundamental changes in the way things are run for it to break in to the mainstream.
What is the longest distance you’ve driven in your van to record a game?
Well the van is relatively young (only been driving it a couple of months), but I drove to France in it to cover the GB U23’s at a tournament in Lille for Hoopsfix. More recently, I took out a hire car on Thursday and have covered 1200 miles on 4 days going to Newcastle, back to London, then to Nottingham, followed by Newcastle again before returning to London Sunday night. That was all to cover basketball for Hoopsfix and the Back British Basketball campaign.
You offer videos and live streaming for many basketball games held in your region, will you be covering the Qualifiers for GB?
Two of the men’s games and two of the women’s games will have highlights broadcast on Channel 4 so we’re not allowed to cover those. Yesterday’s game was live streamed by another website (Inside the Game), but Tuesday’s game in Birmingham we plan to live stream and commentate on (completing one of our commandments!).
Why are you so motivated in Backing GB Basketball?
Basketball is my passion. I want to see it grow in this country until it is mainstream and everyone is talking about it and knows about it. I’d rather fail at something I love than succeed at something I hate 🙂
How soon do you think you’ll complete the 10 Commandments for BBB?
Right now we have four done, the plan is to get all 10 completed by the last qualifier (26th August), right now that is looking pretty realistic 🙂
We want to wish the BBB good luck during their campaigning and of course for the GB squad reach the Eurobasket Qualifiers!!
