BBL Tournament Format Released

The British Basketball League released the tournament format of the 2010-2011 Season of BBL Trophy, BBL Cup, and the BBL Championship and Playoffs.

The BBL Trophy, which will start on September 17, will be going back to the old format in which regional group stages will be followed in the opening round of the season. The four winners of each group will qualify for the semifinals. The semis and final rounds of the tournament will have two legs to be played on the venues of each competing clubs.

On the other hand, the BBL Cup will be implementing the same format they had last season. The top four teams in last season’s BBL Championship (Newcastle Eagles, Sheffield Sharks, Glasgow Rocks, and Cheshire Jets) will be receiving a bye in the first round. The first round will be one-off game and the semis will be played over two legs (home and away format) and will be judged based on aggregate scores.  The Finals will be knockout game and will be played on January at a central venue.

Like the BBL Cup, the BBL Championship season will also be following the same format they used last season. The tournament will start on October and the each of the teams will be going up against each other three times. Teams will play a total of 33 games and the top eight squads will qualify for the BBL Championship Playoffs that will start on the month of April.

The Quarterfinals and Semifinals of the BBL Championship Playoffs will be played over two legs (home and away) and the higher-seeded team will have the luxury of selecting which team will play on their respective venues first. Aggregates scores will determine which team will advance and the finale of the tournament will still be a single-game affair.

More details about the different tournaments including the draw will be released on August.
