Asian champions China unveiled their final men’s basketball roster for the 2012 London Olympics on Tuesday night.
Yi Jianlian, who will be taking on the superstar role after Chinese basketball icon Yao Ming retired, headlines the squad, who will be trying to improve from their previous finish in the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
The 24-year-old Yi, who played for the Dallas Mavericks last NBA season, is expected to spearhead the Chinese’s offensive and defensive attack like how he did during the team’s stint in the recently concluded 2012 Stankovic Continental Cup.
Led by Yi, who was named as the tournament’s Most Valuable Player, China hammered out a convincing 70-51 win over Australia to bag their first-ever Stankovic Cup title since the tournament started eight years ago.
Aside from Yi, China will be led by veterans Wang Zhi Zhi, Sun Yue, Zhu Fangyu, Wang Shipeng, Liu Wei, and young hotshot Yi Li, who also had an impressive stint in 2012 Stankovic Continental Cup.
China, who are targeting to advance to their first ever semifinals stint in an Olympics, was drawn in Group B along with the Aussies, Brazil, Spain, host Great Britain, and Russia.
