Chris Finch: Great Britain Deserve an Olympic Spot; Gordon Agrees

Great Britain Standard Life Men Head Coach Chris Finch reiterated that his team should be considered to have a slot in the 2012 London Olympics after having an impressive stint in the 2011 EuroBasket Qualifier.

The Great Britain Men’s squad formally secured the top spot in their group and a place in next year’s European Championship when they bagged a pulsating 94-85 win against Bosnia on Thursday.

“I can’t change what happens off the court, but we’ve met every performance mark they’ve laid down and we believe we’re entitled to our rightful spot by the way we’ve played. I’m really proud of what our guys have done” Finch said.

The Men’s Team is currently on a role in the last five years and was actually promoted from Division B. This year, GB leaned on the terrific performances of Chicago Bulls Star Luol Deng and former NBA player Pops Mensah-Bonsu.

“This one is more satisfying than the last one. No one outside the GB organization expected us to be here, but I said to the guys that we had to prove ourselves all over again.” Finch added.

The Team could have done better if not for an injury suffered by another NBA star Ben Gordon, who currently plays for the Detroit Pistons.

Gordon was set to join the team this year, but a nasty injury prevented him to play for the National Team.

The good news is the streak shooting guard, who was in the venue in GB’s previous game, announced that he will be with the team next year and hopefully in 2012 London Olympics, if they will be given a slot.

“Just to participate in an Olympics is special enough, but to play it here in 2012, in the country I was born. It would be amazing to play against the USA and to beat them.” Gordon said.

GB will wrap up their impressive Qualifying Tournament campaign on Sunday against Ukraine.
