GB Men’s Team Sweeps Pool Stages; Women’s Team Finally Nails First Win

The Great Britain Men’s Team completed a clean sweep of the Pool Stages when they subdued the USA National Team, 78-66, in the battle of the leaders in the World Wheelchair Basketball Championship in Birmingham.

Simon Munn had another outstanding game scoring 21points to go with his 17 rebounds while Ian Sagar also had a productive night, tallying 17 points and nine rebounds.

The game was very close in the opening quarters with both teams converting three-pointers but the USA Team finished the quarter on top by two. However, Great Britain begun the second quarter on a strong note to turn the tables around, taking a 2 point lead at the half.

Both teams stand toe-to-toe against each other in the third quarter, but GB led by Munn, Sagar, and Pollock waxed hot in the final quarter to build a comfortable lead that led to their fifth win of the tournament.

“I’m happy with the way we played, it’s the best we have played so far this tournament, and hopefully we can take this performance and build on it going into the quarter finals.” Great Britain coach Murray Treseder said.

Meanwhile, the GB Women’s Team finally secured their first win of the World Championship when they outplayed Mexico, 57-50, in a must win game for the host team.

Helen Freeaman scored 18 points and collected nine boards to help GB win and earn a quarterfinal slot in the World Championships.

GB had a great start scoring the first eight points of the match but Mexico quickly made a run of their own. Freeman scored consecutive baskets to give the lead back the host team, 14-10. The Mexicans bounced back in the second quarter to narrow down the lead to one point. Great Britain dominated the entire second half to take the convincing victory.

The Quarterfinals starts tomorrow and the men’s team will take on France while the women’s side will go up against USA.
