GB Teams Bounce Back; Finals Cast Complete



The Great Britain Men’s and Women’s Wheelchair Basketball Teams bounced back from disappointing Quarterfinals defeat in the 2010 World Wheelchair Basketball Championships in Birmingham.

The men’s squad relied Jon Pollock’s heroics to defeat Canada convincingly, 67-51, in the Classification Phase, which will determine the 5th to 8th placer.

Pollock, who is having a great performance in this year’s World Championship, tallied 20 points and 12 assists for England, which will face Poland for the 5th-Place match.

Terrance Bywater added 14 points while Simon Munn contributed 10 points and nine rebounds.

England finished hthe first half on top,31-27, but the Canadians outscored the host team in the third quarter, 18-7, to grab a seven-point lead.

However, England exploded in the final quarter scoring 29 points against Canada’s six points.

Dave Durepos led Canada in scoring with his 15-point performance.

On the women’s side, Great Britain will have a guaranteed improvement from their previous World Championship after snatching a spot in the 5th  to 6th placer match.

Clare Strange had 13 points and eight rebounds for England while Helen Freeman added nine points and six rebounds.

“It feels really good to finally have broken our 8th place position and getting into the 5th/6th match is a reward for all our hard work.” Freeman said.

“The results from the tournament have shown we can play and hold our own against the best teams in the world and we can keep working we can build upon this for London 2012.” he added.

The GB women’s team will fight for the 5th place against The Netherlands, Friday.

Meanwhile, France and Australia won their respective matches against Italy and USA to earn a spot in the finals of the men’s competition. On the other hand, USA and Germany will slug it out for the women’s world title after defeating Canada and Australia, respectively.
