GB Wheelchair Teams Absorb Tough Quarterfinals Defeats



The Men and Women’s National Wheelchair Basketball Team failed to reach the medal rounds after both teams absorbed heartbreaking defeats in the Quarterfinals f the 2010 World Wheelchair Basketball Championships in Birmingham.

The Men’s team, which was undefeated on their first five games, was handily defeated by France, 59-50, in the Quarterfinals encounter.

Sofyane Mehiaoui had a big night, scoring 18 points to go with eight rebounds, while Audrey Cayol and Jerome Courneil added eight points apiece for France.

Great Britain had a 23-19 lead at the half, but France outscored the host teams, 18-12, in the third quarter. France never looked back and continued to dominate in the fourth quarter, which gave them a semifinal slot in this year’s championship.

On the other hand, the USA Wheelchair Women’s Team proved to be too much for Great Britain, as the host team were easily subdued by the Americans, 53-37.

Becca Murray led the American’s attack with her 22 points and 11 rebounds while Natalie Schneider contributed 11 points and nine rebounds.

The Americans led the game from the start and never game the host team a chance to recover, shutting down GB’s hope of entering the medal round.

Both the men’s and women’s team of Great Britain were both relegated to the classification phase of the World Championship, which will determine the 5th to 8th placer.
