GB Women Crush Germany 77-59, Bag 2011 EuroBasket Spot

Great Britain Women’s Basketball squad officially qualified for the EuroBasket Finals for the first time in history, when they capped off the qualifying tournament with 77-59 demolition job of Germany, Thursday in Liverpool.

Julie Page had an outstanding game as she scored 18 points and grabbed nine rebounds to help her team finished the summer the way they did not expected when they started training.

“At the beginning of summer we didn’t really know how to play and what Tom wanted, but we’ve grown as individuals and a team. The steps we’ve taken forward in the three months have been fantastic.” Page said.

Jo Leedham picked off from where she left off when she finished the game with 15 points and five rebounds, while Kim Butler and Natalie Stafford chipped in 12 and ten points, respectively.

Great Britain Head Coach Tom Maher expressed his joy after leading the team to an impressive run in this year’s qualifying tournament, which will be remembered in Great Britain Women’s Basketball History.

“At the start of the campaign we wouldn’t have qualified, but when we started playing some games you could see the progress had taken us to the point we could win games.” Maher said.

“We came to prove we could be competitive and I think we’ve done that. We can win games, and this team has massive potential to improve, and they have which has got us to the finals.” he added.

Roli – Ann Nikagbatse led Germany with her 14 points, while Anne Breitreiner added 12 points for Germany.

“I’ve got to congratulate Great Britain. They’ve dominated throughout the tournament and I like the way they play as a team. For us we started badly and it was hard after that. It will be tough to qualify, but we have three days to prepare and we will see what happens.” Nikagbatse said.
