The Great Britain Standard Life Women are now on top of their after bagging their third-straight victory with a win against Slovakia, 70-63, Monday in Kosice.
Jo Leedham once against showed her impressive form as she scored 26 points, grabbed four rebounds, and converted six of her nine three-point attempts.
Natalie Stafford chipped in ten points, while Kim Butler added nine points and collected five rebounds for Great Britain, which avenged their 76-67 defeat against the same team during their first game of the EuroBasket Qualifier.
“Jo Leedham was sensational but it really was a team effort. We’re pretty sure this is Britain’s first win over Slovakia, so we are all pretty proud.” Great Britain Head Coach Tom Maher said.
The host team outplayed Great Britain in the opening quarter when they mounted a big run that gave them a 26-16 lead.
However, the Brits picked up their game in the second period and Leedham started to impose her will. GB erased Slovakia’s big lead and ended the first half with a one-point deficit, 38-37.
In the second half, Great Britain never looked backed and continued to wax hot. The Brits also tightened up their defense, limiting the host team to just 25 points in the entire second half.
“We started the game with a shoot-out, and Slovakia won that comfortably, going in ahead by ten at quarter-time,” said Maher.
“For them to score 26 in the first quarter and only 25 in the second half is a telling stat.”
Ivana Jalcova led Slovakia in scoring with her 15 points, while Lucia Kupcikova and Romana Vynuchalova chipped in 13 and 11 points, respectively.
Great Britain improved their record to 3-1 and bagged the spot in Group D, ahead of Germany, which suffered a shocking 74-69 defeat against Ukraine at home.
Tom Maher and the rest of the GB Women squad will next face the tough German squad on Thursday, at the Echo Arena in Liverpool.
