GB Women Edge Ukraine 57-49 for their Second Win

The Great Britain Standard Life Women kept their hopes of qualifying in next year’s EuroBasket in Poland when they edged Ukraine, 57-49, Friday at the University of Surrey.

GB had a lackluster start, but Jo Leedham sparked a big run by hitting three 3-pointers in the fourth quarter and finished the game with a game-high 18 points.

Ukraine started the game on fire to build an early 15-9 lead in the first period which widened to as much as 11 points midway through the second period. GB’s Kim Butler ignited a 7-0 run before the half ended to narrow the gap, 25-21, at the half.

The second half was all Great Britain as the host waxed hot from the perimeter and Leedham took over in the fourth quarter, which gave her team a comfortable 55-41 lead with three minutes left in the game.

Natalie Stafford also had a productive night as she scored ten points, while Azania Stewart added nine points for Great Britain, which won their second-straight game of the EuroBasket Qualifier after dropping their opening match against Slovak Republic.

Inna Kochubei had 11 points, while Maryna Sazonenko chipped in ten markers for Ukraine, which dropped their third-straight game.

GB’s hope of finishing on top of Group D also remained possible after Slovakia suffered a 63-58 upset loss against Germany earlier in the day in Kosice.
