NBA star Luol Deng of the Chicago Bulls, as expected, headlines the final roster of Great Britain, who will be competing in an Olympic basketball competition just for the second time in history.
Aside from Deng, Pops Mensah-Bonsu, who had a tremendous season for Turkish club Besiktas, is expected to provide a much-needed punch to the squad along with tried and tested veterans Nate Reinking, Andrew Sullivan, and Robert Archibald.
From 13 players, head coach Chris Finch decided to cut Ogo Adegboye, which he said was a very hard decision to make especially after having a productive camp in Houston.
“Cutting down to a final 12 is always difficult,” Finch said. “We had a really productive camp in Houston and to finally announce the Olympic team here in Loughborough is fantastic. The next four weeks provide us with outstanding competition leading up to the Olympics, which is just what is required before doing battle within our group come Games time.”
The team will continue their preparation for the 2012 London Games, including a much-anticipated test-game showdown against the USA Men’s Team in Manchester.
Deng, who was the only NBA player named to the squad after Byron Mullens became unavailable due to a toe injury and Ben Gordon failed to report to training camp, is expected to carry the scoring load, and the Chicago Bulls star vows to make Great Britain proud.
“We have all worked very hard for this opportunity and to have the final 12 named is exciting,” Deng said. “The next few weeks will fly by and I can’t wait to step on the court with my teammates at the Games. We plan to make Great Britain proud.”
Great Britain was drawn in Group B of the London Games together with Spain, Australia, Brazil, China, and a soon-to-be determined qualifier from the 2012 FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournament.
