Host Turkey Ends Prelims with a Big 87-40 Win Over China



Turkey once again made a lot of people in the stadium happy as they ended their preliminary round assignment with a huge 87-40 victory against China, in Group C action of the 2010 World Basketball Championship in Ankara, Turkey.

Oguz Savas led Turkey in scoring with his 20 points, highlighted by 7-of-10 clip from the field, while Semih Erden chipped in 18 markers, collected 12 boards, dished out three dimes and was 9-of-11 from the field.

Omer Asik also imposed his will inside as he scored 17 points and grabbed 13 rebounds, while Sinan Guler and Baris Ermis added nine points apiece for Turkey, which rested their key players Ersan Ilyasova, Omer Onan, and Hedo Turkoglu in anticipation of a tough grind in the next round of the tournament.

China scored the first two points of the game courtesy Zhaoxu Zhang’s layup, but Turkey had 15-4 run from then on to have a 15-6 advantage at the end of the opening period.

Asik and Savas then took over in the second period and almost scored at will to build a huge 39-13 advantage with a 20-0 run in final six minutes of the first half.

Turkey did not give China a chance to comeback and even continued to increase their lead, which was at 47 in the final buzzer.

Sun Yue, who was a former Los Angeles Lakers player, finished the game with 15 points and four rebounds and was the lone bright spot for China.

China opted to rest their key players Washington Wizards’ up and coming star Yi Jianlian, former Dallas Mavericks player Wang Zhizhi, and former Sacramento Kings prospect guard Liu Wei.

The Chinese Team earned a free ticket to the round-of-16 after Cote d’Ivoire pulled off an 88-79 upset win against Puerto Rico. The three teams finished with an identical 1-4 record, but China had the advantage in the point system.

China will face Lithuania, who topped Group D, while Turkey will face the fourth placer in Group C, which is yet to be determined between France, Spain, and New Zealand.
