Hungary Releases Preliminary Squad for Additional Qualifying Round

Hoping to end their 12-year European championship stint drought, Hungary releases their preliminary squad for the upcoming EuroBasket 2011 Additional Qualifying Round that will kick off on August 9 in Coimbra, Portugal.

Adam Hanga, the 59th overall pick of the San Antonio Spurs in the 2011 NBA Draft, along with veterans Peter Lorant and Marton Fodor was named to the squad, which will collide with Finland and Portugal for the last two spots in the main draw of the EuroBasket Men 2011 in Lithuania.

The 25-year-old power forward, Lorant, is optimistic about their chances, but they know that Finland and Portugal will also be going all out to take one of the two remaining EuroBasket spots.

“They’ll have the same hunger as us,” Lorant said. “It’s a big opportunity for the smaller teams like us because the next time, it will probably be more difficult to make it. But, I have a lot of confidence in our team. I’m not saying that we are better than them, but we want to beat them. And we have a lot of work to do to be able to do that.”

As part of their preparation for their upcoming campaign, Hungary will take on Asian champions Iran on July 18 Szombathely and on July 20 in Kormend. The team will also travel to Austria for a series of friendly matches.
