The hostile crowd in Panevezys Arena went home with smiles on their faces once again as Lithuania scored another impressive win after clobbering Poland, 97-77, to score their second win in as many games in the ongoing EuroBasket Men 2011.
Mantas Kalnietis spearheaded Lithuania’s balance attack as he finished with a game-high 19 points to go with six rebounds and six assist, a performance that was highlighted by a remarkable 8-for-8 clip from the field.
Darius Songaila also had a productive night, finishing with 14 points on 7-for-10 shooting, while Rimantas Kaukenas and Martynas Pocius added 10 points apiece for Lithuania, who had a slow start but managed to find their rhythm quickly.
Poland, who had a gallant stand against defending champions Spain on their tournament-opener, took a 16-13 lead on the first six minutes of the game, but Kalnietis got into the groove and sparked a 20-6 run with his 10-point performance in the opening period.
Lithuania took full control of the game and Poland couldn’t withstand the huge blast unleashed by the host squad, giving Lithuania their second win after edging Great Britain in their tournament-opener.
Thomas Kelati had 16 points and four rebounds, while Szymon Szewczyk and Dardan Berisha added 10 points apiece for Poland, who will try to snatch their first win when they face Portugal on Friday.
Lithuania, on the other hand, will put their unblemished record on the line in their much-anticipated clash with erstwhile undefeated Turkey, who dismantled Great Britain, 90-61, in their game today.
