There will be a certain sense of déjà vu for fans of Nottingham Wildcats since for the second season in a row, they will have a French playmaker named Melisa to direct traffic in the backcourt.
However it won’t be their previous favourite Melissa Diawakana returning for the reigning WBBL Champions, but her compatriot Melisa Mendes.
A graduate of UTEP, Mendes has also played in her homeland for Le Harve in LF2 and played in the top flight of Swedish basketball earlier this year with Akropol BBK Spanga.
“I’m pretty excited to play for Nottingham,” she declared.
“I love challenges and I know that last season the team lost the Play-Off Final against Team Northumbria, so this season we have to give some payback and I love that. I can’t wait to meet the girls and the staff, so I’m ready for a big season.
“I also decided to play in England because I love the country and my brother is playing soccer with Reading FC this season. I also love Robin Hood of course, so adding everything together – it’s a good fit for me!”
Meanwhile Wildcats’ head coach Dave Greenaway commented, “I am extremely pleased that Melisa has chosen Nottingham to be the next destination in her basketball journey.
“Her strong play and athleticism at the guard position will be a major asset for us as a team.
“Melisa’s ability to impact the game in varying ways will be of great value – along with her experience from playing in Europe and her US collegiate career.
“She is an exciting addition and will be an integral component for 2016-17.”
Further player announcements will be made as Wildcats look to finalise their roster for the new campaign.
