Time to meet – Abby Lowe

March 18, 2015 By Coach Leave a Comment

We catch up with another rising star in the WBBL as we find out more about Barking Abbey Crusaders and England sharp-shooting teenager, Abby Lowe.

Name: Abby Lowe

Team: Barking Abbey Crusaders

Nickname: Just Abby

Age: 17

Position: Shooting guard

Signature Play: The three-point shot

Twitter address: @Abbylowz

Why did you choose basketball?
I used to do dance and do gymnastics, but at sports day in primary school, I was invited to join a basketball team because I was ridiculously tall for my age. I haven’t been able to stop since then.

Do you have any superstitions or rituals before you play?
I’m not superstitious, but I can’t go into a game with a risk of my hair not staying up properly…

What has been your best basketball memory so far?
I will never forget my first team when we all started and got better together. They became like family, so there are lots of good memories. However my best memory has to be gaining promotion to Division A with England U16 last summer.

You have an opportunity to work one-to-one with the greatest women’s basketball coaches in the world. What would you ask them to help you with?
I would ask them to help me gain a better vision of the game, and to work on anything they suggest that will help me.

What would be your perfect weekend?
Probably shopping in America with an unlimited credit card, watching a NBA game in the evening and then spending the Sunday relaxing with my family on a warm beach somewhere…………

At school your best subjects are/were and your worst are/were?
My worst subject was chemistry as I just didn’t get it and my best was French – although it helps that I lived in France for 10 years!

You have one song, one movie, one drink, one type of food and three famous people to live with you on a desert island – what and who do you choose?
The song would be ‘Happy’ by Pharrell Williams to keep up the good mood. The movie will be Annie (the new one) as I’ve already watched it enough times to know I’ll never get bored of it. The type of food would be pasta, since I just don’t get bored of that either. The drink is chocolate milk – I’m an addict. Ed Sheeran and Taylor Swift would be guests because I dream of meeting them anyway, and my sister needs to start getting famous, because I can’t live without her!

Which of your team-mates has the best and worst fashion and musical tastes?
Well, we all look pretty good and Rhianna has pretty good taste in music, although I’m ashamed to say that the rest of the team would probably say that I have the worst taste in music!

Who or what makes you laugh?
My sister, because it only takes a look and we just get each other! Also my boyfriend Riccardo, because he’s just so silly!

Who and/or what do you find really annoying?
A lot! Like when the volume isn’t on an even number, or when I push the door when the sign actually reads pull.

The Harlem-shake and the ice-bucket challenge – did you experience either?
Yes, the Harlem Shake I did with my old team and I’ve never laughed so much, whereas the ice challenge I did with my sister and have never screamed so much!

What other sports/sportspeople do you like and/or which other teams do you follow and support?
I like football thanks to my dad, who is a Manchester City fan. So obviously I decided to become a Man-United supporter!

Your coach is coming round for dinner and you have to cook (no excuses) what would you make them?
I’d keep it to the plain and simple with an easy Spaghetti Bolognese, because it’s a dish I can actually make taste nice.

Finally, tell us something hardly anybody or nobody knows about you – a secret crush, special talent or anything at all!
Since I moved to France at the age of four and started playing there, I find myself thinking in French on court – something which is really not good when I start talking French to my English team-mates!
