We catch up with one of the favourites to be crowned WBBL MVP and someone who is certainly in the right country to feast on her first love of soccer (football to you and us) – it’s none other than Carm Reynolds of the Wildcats!
Name: Carmen Reynolds
Team: Nottingham Wildcats
Nickname: Carmelo aka “Melo”
Signature Play: And-1’s
Twitter address: @c33rey
Why did you choose basketball?
Because my childhood dream of becoming a professional soccer player didn’t work out. But really – soccer was my first love, before I even picked up a basketball.
Do you have any superstitions or rituals before you play?
I always re-tie my shoes after warm-ups right before stepping onto the court. I like to make sure my shoes are extra tight, because it makes my unstable ankles feel more secure!
What has been your best basketball memory so far?
At the University of Michigan watching the 2012 NCAA Tourney selection show and finding out our team had made it to the Big Dance. I cried tears of joy! It was something our team always wanted to achieve and to make it a reality was incredible.
You have an opportunity to work one-to-one with the greatest women’s basketball coaches in the world. What would you ask them to help you with?
Footwork. Both offensively and defensively. I have a passion for fundamentals and breaking down every basketball movement to become a more effective player. I love learning new footwork from different coaches/trainers/teammates!
What would be your perfect weekend?
A weekend getaway to a tropical beach. I love the sun and I love the ocean.
At school your best subjects are/were and your worst are/were?
My best and favourite subject was math and statistics. I love numbers. I love analytics. My worst was history, because I absolutely hated memorising past events and dates.
You have one song, one movie, one drink, one type of food and three famous people to live with you on a desert island – what and who do you choose?
Song: ‘Man in the Mirror’ by Michael Jackson, Bridesmaids as the movie, some water and pizza! As for the three people…. Kevin Hart to make me laugh, LeBron James so I can train with the best player in the world and Musiq Soulchild so he can entertain me with his voice/music.
Which of your team-mates has the best and worst fashion and musical tastes?
Hard to say since I rarely see our team in anything else other than track suits! As for music – Coach DG has the worst music taste solely based on his song selection to be played as we get announced before games (‘Turn Down For What’ – DJ Snake Ft Lil Jon).
Who or what makes you laugh?
My parents on video chat are always quite comical. My room-mates and boyfriend would probably agree with that, too.
Who and/or what do you find really annoying?
Unpunctual or irresponsible people.
The Harlem-shake and the ice-bucket challenge – did you experience either?
I did the ALS ice bucket challenge over the summer, but not the Harlem shake. I sure did enjoy all of the Harlem Shake videos tho!
What other sports/sportspeople do you like and/or which other teams do you follow and support?
I’m a supporter of all Cleveland teams. Being from Ohio and having lots of family living in Cleveland, I was born and bred a Cleveland fan. I cheer for the Cavaliers (NBA), the Browns (NFL), and the Indians (MLB). It’s not always easy being a Cleveland supporter considering they have some of the worst sports franchises of all time!
Your coach is coming round for dinner and you have to cook (no excuses) what would you make them?
I would attempt to prepare a Caribbean dish, fail miserably, then we would head to Nando’s instead!
Finally, tell us something hardly anybody or nobody knows about you – a secret crush, special talent or anything at all!
I can recite the 44 US Presidents in order of their Presidency! When this will ever be useful? I do not know!
