Why did you choose basketball?
I swam for several years until the age of 10. After one of my sessions, I remember seeing a women’s team warming up. I was fed up with swimming and basketball seemed so much more interesting and intense. I never regretted switching sports.
Do you have any superstitions or rituals before you play?
I make sure I’ve eaten sufficiently before a game and that I have food with me. I absolutely can’t play on an empty stomach. Also my hair needs to be in place.
What has been your best basketball memory so far?
I have a lot of great ones! I really loved my first basketball team. We played together for six straight years and we were a very close group. Even now after many years, we still meet up!
You have an opportunity to work one-to-one with the greatest women’s basketball coaches in the world. What would you ask them to help you with?
Foot speed – I hate being beat off the dribble. Plus my own dribbling skills could use some further good coaching.
What would be your perfect weekend?
Relaxing while having friends, family and pets around, good food and nice weather.
At school your best subjects are/were and your worst are/were?
My best subject was Biology – I am actually a qualified teacher in Biology. My worst one was history, since the past just can’t hold my attention.
You have one song, one movie, one drink, one type of food and three famous people to live with you on a desert island – what and who do you choose?
At this moment I would choose: The Rolling Stones – ‘Paint it Black’, Django Unchained, Apple juice, Hugh Laurie as I am hung on House MD, Jamie Oliver as I have got to have a cook on a desert island and Alicia Keys who has the best voice ever.
Which of your team-mates has the best and worst fashion and musical tastes?
It’s hard to say about a team with so many cultural backgrounds. I think Greta has the best fashion taste, but one of my team mates (prefer not to name her) puts her sweatpants in her high pulled-up socks which I think is just horrible. I heard Victoria has a pretty good music taste – she is the appointed DJ for away games.
Who or what makes you laugh?
My boyfriend Rick makes me laugh the most and watching ‘fail videos’ on youtube – especially of animals.
Who and/or what do you find really annoying?
I do not like pretentious, arrogant and dishonest people.
The Harlem-shake and the ice-bucket challenge – did you experience either?
I didn’t do either and am very happy about that! But I got the honour to throw some ice cold water on our coach during the summer, together with some other girls. Of course I was the first one to soak him!
What other sports/sportspeople do you like and/or which other teams do you follow and support?
I follow the Leeds Force Men’s team (BBL) very closely, it’s great to be part of a big basketball programme, plus my boyfriend plays for the men’s team. I also support the Belgian national football team – our guys just did great this summer and there is so much more to come from them!
Your coach is coming round for dinner and you have to cook (no excuses) what would you make them?
I would make him a typical Belgian dish called ‘vidée’, which is a meat dish containing chicken, mushrooms and tiny meatballs, usually served with Belgian fries. For dessert, it has to be chocolate mousse with (duh!) Belgian chocolate!
Finally, tell us something hardly anybody or nobody knows about you – a secret crush, special talent or anything at all!
I love playing video games – especially old school ones like Crash Bandicoot, Donkey Kong, etc. – and would love to get my hands on a PS2!
