We catch up with one of the best three-point shooters in the WBBL and a real game changer for Cardiff Met Archers!
Name: Jess Jenkins
Team: Cardiff Met Archers
Nickname: ‘PeeWee’, but luckily I grew out of that -so just occasionally ‘Jenks’.
Position: Shooting Guard
Signature Play: Anything that isn’t too close to the basket, I try not to cross the three-point line.
Twitter address: @jessjenks14
Why did you choose basketball?
My mom was a coach, so my first memories are in a gym. I didn’t know any different.
Do you have any superstitions or rituals before you play?
I try quite hard not to be superstitious, but if I shoot really well one day then I find it hard not to recreate the same meals/socks/etc the next day. But I don’t believe in superstitions.
What has been your best basketball memory so far?
Hands down playing in the Sweet 16 during my senior year of college.
You have an opportunity to work one-to-one with the greatest women’s basketball coaches in the world. What would you ask them to help you with?
I’d want to soak up everything I could. Anything with creating shots against bigger players is at the top of the list.
What would be your perfect weekend?
Probably a hike and ending up on a beach with good food, good friends and a good book. Sun shining and hot weather.
At school your best subjects are/were and your worst are/were?
Since I just finished my Master’s dissertation, I’d really prefer not to think about school at all for a while!
You have one song, one movie, one drink, one type of food and three famous people to live with you on a desert island – what and who do you choose?
The one song would be ‘Banana Pancakes’ by Jack Johnson. Animal House because it’s a classic and I’ve already seen it enough times that I know I’ll never get tired of watching it. I might have to pick tea for the drink, maybe I’ve been in the UK too long! A burrito from Chipotle is all I really need on the island. For the three people, I’d want Kristen Wigg so I could always be laughing and then we’d be best friends; Bear Grylls to handle all the survival necessities; and anyone that brings a puppy, because I really really want a dog.
Which of your team-mates has the best and worst fashion and musical tastes?
Hmmmm, tough because we all have similar music tastes but Stef Collins likes some old school rock and I’m on board with that. Most people probably think Sarah Wagstaff has bad taste in music, but I don’t mind her somewhat odd song choices – well, most of the time at least. As for fashion sense, Chloe Richards already voted me best dressed so……ha ha!
Who or what makes you laugh?
Anyone that can quote the entire Bridesmaids movie with me.
Who and/or what do you find really annoying?
I think you should look up what misophonia is, and then proceed not to ever eat near me.
The Harlem-shake and the ice-bucket challenge – did you experience either?
Luckily, or unluckily depending on how you look at it, I was in plaster during the ice-bucket challenge so couldn’t actually get ice cold water thrown on me.
What other sports/sportspeople do you like and/or which other teams do you follow and support?
Roger Federer tops this list and I’m a big Boston Celtics fan. Other than the Cavs, I’ll root for Cleveland sports teams – but I’m not a die hard fan of teams in the other sports.
Your coach is coming round for dinner and you have to cook (no excuses) what would you make them?
I’ve recently taken a liking to cooking, so I’m confident I could cook Stef something she’d approve of. Maybe cajun chicken sweet potato skins (my newest successful experiment) and a Quest bar for dessert – as long as I put it in the oven it counts as cooking right?
Finally, tell us something hardly anybody or nobody knows about you – a secret crush, special talent or anything at all!
Carmen Reynolds (Nottingham Wildcats) and I played on the same team (Go Comets!)before we went to college in America and it meant we never played against each other until this year! I much prefer playing with her than against her.
