Despite a short period of preparation, the USA Women’s squad are already showing how dominating they can be, blowing out Angola, 90-38, in day two of women’s basketball competition of the 2012 London Olympics on Monday night.
Candace Parker had a double-double performance as she finished with 14 points and 12 rebounds in just 23 minutes of playing time, while Seimone Augustus and Maya Moore added 13 and 11 points, respectively.
Angel McCoughtry also had a productive night, scoring 10 points in 18 minutes to go with four rebounds for USA, who are slowly building chemistry after a short period of preparation prior to the Olympics.
“The goal is to continue to get better every game and I think that was what we did against Angola,” said Parker whose team led from start to finish. “I think we’re continuing to work on things that no matter what the scoreboard can help us down the line.”
Sonia Guadalupe, on the other hand, had 10 points, while Felizarda Jorge added eight points and five rebounds for Angola, who did enough to impress their head coach Anibal Moreira.
“We decided we want to enjoy the game, we understood before the difference in the standard,” Moreira said. “We feel a lot of pride to be able to play against such a team, who are idols for our players.”
Meanwhile, China continues to impress after posting their second-straight victory – putting themselves in position to advance to the next round.
China, who pulled off a 66-57 upset win over the much-favored Czech Republic in day one, hammered out a dominating 83-58 win over Croatia in game where they were in full control for almost the entire match.
Veteran Chen Nan is having a great tournament, averaging 19 points and nine rebounds in their first two games, highlighted by her 28-point and 10-rebound performance against Croatia.
Aside from China and USA, Turkey remains undefeated in Group B after defeating Czech Republic, while France and Russia sit on top of Group B with their 2-0 record.
