Andrew Thomson scored a game-winning tip-in to lead the Eagles to a thrilling 85-84 win over the Worcester Wolves to improve their record to 23-3 – four games ahead of the second-running Wolves.
The two teams had a see-saw battle for the entire game until the final minute of the game. Sherrad Prezzie-Blue scored on a drive to five the Wolves a precarious 84-83 lead with only 12 seconds left in the game.
The Eagles went on to Thompson in the ensuing play but he missed his shot with three seconds left in the game. Smith tipped the ball in, but also misfired. Luckily, Thomson was at the right place at the right time to score the game-winning tip.
Thomson had a huge night as he finished with 12 points to go with 16 rebounds and five assists, while Charles Smith led their offensive attack with 25 points and nine rebounds.
Joe Chapman also had a share of the spotlight with his 16 points and seven rebounds, while Paul Gause chipped in 15 markers.
With the win, the Eagles just need to win one more in their remaining four games to win the regular-season title, but head coach Fab Flournoy insisted that they should be complacent despite the huge odds favoring them.
“We will celebrate the league when it’s won, not before,” Flournoy said. “Given every team we play has something to play for we simply cannot count wins before we earn them.”
