Gloucester City Queens join WBBL – Women’s British…

The 2021/22 WBBL season will see 13 teams competing for honours as new team Gloucester City Queens join the Women’s British Basketball League.

Part of Gloucester Sport, the Gloucester City Queens will
play their home games at Oxstalls Arena at Oxstalls Sports Park, which also
hosts Super League Netball, in partnership with Aspire Trust.

Jay Marriott, CEO of Gloucester Sport, said: “We are
delighted to be accepted into the WBBL and thankful to the board and teams for
all their support. As a new franchise, we want to do them proud and bring
inspiration to women and girls in the local area looking to progress in the
sport. It was important to us that we put the women’s game in the limelight and
on its own stage locally. We can’t wait to get started!”

Alex Petheram, co-owner of Gloucester Sport, said: “This is
fantastic news for us as a club and for Gloucestershire as a county. We’re so
excited to bring more professional women’s sport to Gloucester. Basketball is
one of the fastest growing sports in the UK and a great family event.”

Jim Saker, Chair of WBBL, commented: “We’re delighted to
welcome Gloucester City Queens to the WBBL family. Women’s sport is deservedly gaining
more recognition and the fact we’re able to welcome a new franchise to the
League shows the aspiration and growth from all involved. We’re looking forward
to what will be a very exciting season.”

Details of competition formats and fixtures for the 2021/22
season will be announced in the coming weeks.
