Kenrick Liburd will be returning to Barking Abbey to assist Mark Clark with the WBBL squad for the 2017-18 season.
Liburd, a former student at BA and an assistant to Clark from 2014-16, departed last season to take on a Head Coach position with Oaklands Wolves in their inaugural season in the WBBL.
“I’m thankful for the opportunity afforded to me by Oaklands, to have had the experience of leading them into the WBBL,” Liburd reflected on his season with them. “I enjoyed my last year and learnt a great deal about myself and the league. I wish them well moving forward and am excited about the future of their young talent.”
And on his return to BA, he commented: “I am delighted to be back working with Barking Abbey and Mark Clark again. We had competitive success last time around, culminating in a Trophy final appearance, so it will be good to see where we can take it this season. We have a good working relationship and a mutual respect for each other on and off the court.
“I believe I can really add value to the programme, working with a professional coaching staff that will also push me to become a better coach while utilising my abilities.”
Liburd also becomes another member of the Barking Abbey coaching staff with National Team experience, currently assisting with the Great Britain Under-16 Women, along with heading up the East Region Performance Centre for the Under-15 and Under-13 girls. He graduated from BA in 1998, and has spent the majority of his coaching career in the US, most recently heading up the Tennessee Temple women’s basketball programme for five years from 2009-2014.
Mark Clark added: “It’s great to welcome Kenrick back to Barking. I thought he did a great job last year as Head Coach at Oaklands. I’m pleased that he feels he can have an impact with us in the WBBL and develop the players within the academy. His return builds on the quality coaches we have.”
