Rocks add Wood as assistant coach

August 25, 2017 By Leave a Comment

Glasgow Rocks have strengthened their coaching staff ahead of the upcoming season by appointing Darryl Wood as full time assistant coach.

Wood helped coach alongside head coach Tony Garbelotto at the open trials earlier this month, and has amassed a wide array of experience within different environments.

He started his coaching career with his local club Dunfermline Reign 11 years ago, and since then has developed a love and passion for developing both people and basketball players, with experience coaching at the European Championships B Division as both an Assistant Coach and then Head Coach.

More recently, Wood was head coach of the Scotland Under-18 Women’s team and was also the Caledonia Pride assistant coach in the WBBL.

Garbelotto, who was confirmed as Rocks head coach in June, had been keen to bolster his backroom staff, but he was willing to be patient in order to identify the right candidate.

He is delighted to have secured Wood’s services and believes he will be an invaluable asset to the Rocks franchise.

“I am extremely excited to be able to announce Darryl as the assistant coach of the Glasgow Rocks,” he said.

“When I was named head coach of the Rocks I set out to find and work with the most talented Scottish coaches. Darryl has all the attributes to be a top coach and I believe his knowledge and work ethic will be huge assets for us going into this season.”

Co-owner, Duncan Smillie, added: “This is a crucial appointment and we are very lucky to have secured the services of Darryl full-time.

“Darryl will be working alongside Tony on a daily basis starting next week in preparation for our busy pre-season, which gets underway on September 4th.

“It was important for us to secure the services of someone who would be comfortable leading our team for what will no doubt be crucial games away to Cheshire and Leeds while Tony leads the Scotland team at next year’s Commonwealth Games.

“Darryl is someone who ticks this and many other boxes.”

Wood concluded: “I am delighted to be working with the Glasgow Rocks next season. It’s a great opportunity for me to use my knowledge to enhance a programme that is already set to be one of the BBL’s best, while also giving me the chance to learn and take my coaching to the next level.

“I cannot wait to get out on the floor and start working with the players and look forward to seeing all the Rocks fans at our season opener on the 1st of October.”
